I am searching for a good Arabic language course - preferably in an immersion setting like Damascus. I have emailed Damascus University. Is there also a course offered by the British Council in Damascus. I am a high beginner at the moment but by next summer (2006) I should be a full-fledged intermediate learner though my speaking facility is pretty awful - little chance for me to speak Arabic in Toronto. Thanks from Betsy

Good for you! I am glad that you are looking to study Arabic. I know that the British Council offers colloquial classes, and they may offer Fusha classes as well. You should check their website. I am looking for the same at present - to start in January '06. I just had an email from the British Council in Damascus, informing me that (at least at present) they do not plan any language courses (including the Syrian Dialect courses). When I phoned them I was told that "the only place to learn Arabic was at the University of Damascus". There are other possibilities, however, but private, not institutional.

I would recommend private lessons with Hala Loulou. She is a very professional Arabic teacher (Modern standard Arabic (Fusha) and also the Syrian dialect) and she does made-to-measure courses depending on the amount of time you are going to spend in Damascus.
